India Open: PV Sindhu to face fifth seed Beiwen Zhang in the final today

February 4, 2018

After getting knocked out by Saina Nehwal in the Indonesia Masters semi-final, P.V. Sindhu is just one win away from lifting her first major title of 2018 as she faces Beiwen Zhang of USA in the final of the 2018 India Open Women’s Singles clash. Sindu is also the only Indian left in the Tournament after Saina Nehwal bowed out in the quarter-finals with a 10-21, 13-21 to World No.11 American Zhang, who faces Sindhu in the final today.

Some of the other Indian players who featured in the Tournament were mixed Doubles pair of Pranaav Jerry Chopra and N. Sikki Reddy but could only last until the semi-final of the $350,000 India Open BWF World Tour Super 500.

Sindhu, however, produced one of her finest games to outlast third seed and former world champion Ratchanok Intanon 21-13, 21-15 to remain one win away from successfully defending her title. Sindhu rattled the Thai by mixing clever net-play with big strokes as she led 13-4 in the first game before securing the 21-13 win.

The second game saw Ratchanok trying to push Sindhu with some clever placements but the Indian shuttler kept firing smashes to quell the challenge from the Thai and eventually wrapped up the game as well as the match with a 21-15 win.

Following the win at the Siri Fort Sports Complex, the three-time World Championship medallist Sindhu improved her head-to-head record against 22-year-old Ratchanok to 3-4.

Beiwen Zhang, who is without a coach in this event, has been at her best in the tournament so far. She defeated Cheung Ngan Yi in 3 games to book a date with Sindhu in the final.

The India Open 2018 final,  PV Sindhu Vs Beiwen Zhang will be played at Siri Fort Indoor  Stadium in New Delhi and the match is expected to start around 5.30 pm (IST).
