It is speculated that a third world war would be waged for the water with declining groundwater resources, unable to meet the requirements of the ever-growing human population. It is all the more a scary prospect and heading towards a doom.

Water is precious — we all know that, but how much do we value its preciousness? We are so reckless with its usage — be it any of our habits which we get to watch once we stroll in our neighbourhood, be it to wash our vehicles or cleaning our front yards as part of our cultural practice. Water keeps flowing freely through the hose pipes or end up using plenty to finish those rituals.

What is appalling nowadays is the overflowing of the overhead water tanks. Everyday it happens in almost all the households and the commercial establishments and one can only imagine the huge amounts in which the wastage happens.

Is it not time for the admini-stration to take up a stringent law to install an alarm mandatorily in every house and establishments to stop water form overflowing into the streets and drains? I guess at least 5 to 10 litres of precious water gets wasted before turning off the water pump and if somebody is callous, it would be another tankfill of water or even more sometimes.

If this is the state of one house, we can calculate the amount of water wastage from about lakhs of households and other establishments in Mysuru itself.

My request is to bring this as a law and to be followed up strictly by the District Administration or Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) and let our city be a model city towards that goal of conservation of the precious lifeline of health — WATER.
