Intl. Webinar on ‘Nutrition for Health and Disease’

Mysore/Mysuru: The Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, Faculty of Life Sciences, JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research (JSS AHER), Mysuru, had organised a three-day International Webinar on the theme ‘Nutrition for Health and Disease: Exploring New Horizons for Sustenance’ as a prelude to commemorate the World Food Day-2020 which is celebrated every year on Oct.16.

The webinar was inaugurated in the presence of Vice-Chancellor Dr. Surinder Singh, who highlighted the importance of food and nutrition to maintain normal health and management of disease conditions. 

Dr. P.A. Kushalappa, Director (Academics), JSS AHER, addressed the participants focussing on the consumption of natural immunity boosters through foods to overcome the current pandemic situation.

Dr. K.A. Raveesha, Faculty Head, stressed on holistic approach to be followed by nutritionists and dieticians.

The webinar was also attended by Dr. B. Suresh, Pro-Chancellor and Dr. B. Manjunatha, Registrar. In addition, Dr. S. Balasubramanian, Director (Research), Dr. P. Vanitha Reddy, Coordinator, Department of Nutrition and Dietetics-FLS, Dr. Sudha Sairam,  Ragavi and the team of Food and Nutrition were present.

A total of 540 participants were present in the webinar from all over India, USA, UAE, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Uganda.

The three-day webinar had eminent speakers like Dr. Pratibha Dwaraknath, St. John’s Research Institute, who spoke on ‘First Thousand Days of Life’, covering the aspects on the importance of proper nutrition for women before and during pregnancy. Dr. S. Vimal Karani from University of Reading, UK, focused on ‘Role of Nutrigenetics, Nutrigenomics and Epigenetics in the Prevention of Non-Communicable Diseases’ like diabetes.

Dr. Asna Urooj, University of Mysore, spoke on the ‘Relevance of the Glycemic Index in Medical Nutrition Therapy’ explaining its influence on the blood sugar levels of diabetics. Dr. ShivshankarTimmanpyati from Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, covered the topic ‘New Horizons in Clinical Nutrition Practice.’

M. Bamini from Sundaram Medical Foundation, Chennai, highlighted on the importance of ‘Parenteral Nutrition in Critically ill Patients.’  Meenakshi Bajaj, Dietician, TN Government, gave a talk titled ‘Carbs, a Frenemy in Diabetic Management’, highlighting how fad diet intake is leading to onset of various diseases. 

The ultimate goal of this webinar was to improve individual and public health by discovering new effective strategies for the maintenance of wellness and for the prevention and treatment of disease. 

PG and UG courses

The Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, JSS AHER, Mysuru, is offering PG courses — MSc. in Nutrition and Dietetics, MSc. in Sports Nutrition and Management. 

In addition, UG course in Food, Nutrition and Dietetics and Ph.D programmes. Admissions are open for the courses.
