ITF’s 15,000$ Bhopal Tennis Tourney: City’s Dhruthi shocks Riya to enter semi-finals

Mysuru-based Dhruthi T. Venugopal representing India and taking part in ITF 15,000$ women’s tennis tourney at Bhopal scored an upset win over higher rated Riya Bhatia of India 6-3, 7-6 (2) on Thursday in a match which lasted for one hour and forty-one minutes.

Dhruthi, playing an attacking game on both the flanks, capitalised on the unforced errors made by her rival. Serving well, Dhruthi had 4 aces in the match and had 64% of her first serves in and won 60% of her service games. Riya Bhatia served badly and had 12 double faults in the match. Riya had a first serve percentage of 53% and only won 54% of her service games.

Dhruthi will meet second seeded Mihalikova Tereza (Slovakia) in the semi-finals, while in the other semis, India’s Kanika Vaidya will take on Great Britain’s Emily Webley-Smith.
