Mysuru: Ganabharathi has organised a rare Hindustani Jal Tarang music concert at its Veene Seshanna Bhavan in  Kuvempunagar tomorrow (Aug. 14) at 6 pm by renowned artiste Vidu. Shashikala Dani.

She will be accompanied by Pt. Bhimashankar Bidanur on tabla. Jal Tarang is a traditional melodic percussion instrument from the Indian subcontinent consisting of ceramic or metal bowls filled with varying levels of water. It is played by striking the bowl rims with wooden sticks, creating unique pitches determined by both water volume and bowl size.

Artistes’ profile

Vidu. Shashikala Dani: India’s only female Jal Tarang artiste, Vidu. Shashikala Dani is trained by her father and guru Pt. D.R. Warang. She has performed Gamaka recitation along with her husband, Surendra Dani. She is an ‘A’ grade artiste of Akashvani and Doordarshan.

She has received many awards — most notably the Karnataka Government’s Karnataka Kalashri, Kittur Rani Chennamma Award, a special award from Vidu. Gangubai Hangal and having performed Jal Tarang programmes nationwide, she has also trained her son in Jal Tarang playing. She is a retiree of the State Bank of Mysore.

Pt. Bhimashankar Bidanur is a regular performer in Hindustani concerts held in Mysuru.  Having learned continuously for eight years from Pandit Shivaputrappa Hoogar, Pandit K.S. Hadapad, Dr. Puttaraja Kavi Gavaigalu (Shri Veereshwara Punyashrama, Gadag), Pt. Bhimashankar Bidanur is now training under Pandit Ravindra Yavagal, who is based in Bengaluru.  He has earned praise for providing tabla accompaniment to renowned scholars across the State such as Pandit Dr. Puttaraj Gawai, Dr. Rajeev Taranath, Indudhar Nirody and others.

Currently, he is serving as a tabla accompanist at Dr. Gangubai Hangal Music and Performing Arts University in Mysuru.
