Mumbai: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has appointed former Indian player Gautam Gambhir as the Head Coach of Team India (senior men).

Gambhir, who replaces Rahul Dravid, will assume his duties starting with the upcoming away series against Sri Lanka, where India is set to play three ODIs and three T20Is commencing from July 27.

Gautam Gambhir expressed his excitement, saying, “It is absolute honour to serve my country. I congratulate Rahul Dravid and his team for their exemplary run. I am excited to take on the role of Head Coach and look forward to working closely with the BCCI, Head of Cricket VVS Laxman, the support staff and the players to achieve success in the upcoming tournaments.”

The former Indian opener, known for his exceptional batting prowess and strategic acumen, Gambhir has been a pivotal figure in Indian cricket. His remarkable contributions to the Indian team, including crucial performances in 2007 ICC T20 World Cup and the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup. Gambhir also led the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to two IPL titles in 2012 and 2014 and helped the team secure its third title as a mentor in 2024.

In his new role as Head Coach, Gambhir will be responsible for overseeing the development and performance of the Indian cricket team. His focus will be on fostering a culture of excellence, discipline and teamwork, while also nurturing young talent and preparing the team for future challenges on the global stage.

BCCI also extended its heartfelt gratitude to Dravid for his outstanding service as Head Coach.
