JSS AHER launches Corticosteroid Stewardship Initiative

Mysore/Mysuru: An initiative aimed at promoting safe and rational use of corticosteroids in rheumatological clinical practice was launched during the Academic Council meeting held at JSS Medical College recently, with the release of CorticoCare Card and the ‘Steroid Prescribing Guidelines for the Department of Rheumatology – 2026.’

The initiative forms a part of the Ph.D research titled ‘Corticosteroid Stewardship in a Tertiary Care Hospital in India,’ by Dr. Mohammed Daiyaan Khan, a Ph.D Scholar, Department of Clinical Pharmacy at JSS College of Pharmacy.

As part of the project, a multidisciplinary Rheumatology Corticosteroid Stewardship Committee (RCSC) was constituted to promote the safe, rational and evidence-based use of corticosteroids. Under this initiative, the CorticoCare Card, a patient-held steroid alert card and the Steroid Prescribing Guidelines for the Department of Rheumatology – 2026 were developed.

The CorticoCare Card is designed to improve communication between patients and healthcare providers regarding ongoing steroid therapy. It incorporates a colour-coded risk identification system to quickly indicate the patient’s steroid risk status and includes a QR code linking to digital educational information.

This initiative was carried out in collaboration with the Department of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology and the Department of Clinical Pharmacy, JSS Hospital, Mysuru.
