Jugalbandi at Moonlight Music – 200: Listeners of classical music on decline: Dr. S.L. Bhyrappa

May 30, 2018

Mysuru:  “Of late, the number of people listening to classical music is on the decline probably owing to change in outlook of them,” opined writer Dr. S.L. Bhyrappa.

He was speaking at the special Jugalbandi programme organised as part of 200th Moonlight music programme at Suttur Mutt at the foot of Chamundi Hill here last evening.

Quoting a statement of Philosopher Plato, Dr. Bhyrappa said that the outlook of a person is defined by the quality or type of music, the person relishes.

He asserted that classical music was the real music which has several factors to be presented with good support  of accompaniments. He pointed out that of late, musicians have begun innovating variants of classical music and evolving a new strain of music. However, Dr. Bhyrappa contented that true Jugalbandi is a recital presented by two musicians, disciples of the same guru, and presenting a common Raaga.

The prog. featured a jugalbandi by Dr. Pravin Godkhindi (flute) and Dr. Jayanthi Kumaresh (veena), supported by K.U. Jayachandra Rao on mridanga and Udayraj Karpur on tabla.

Suttur Seer Sri Shivarathri Deshikendra Swamiji graced the occasion. Kannada & Culture Director N.R. Vishukumar was also present.
