Justice A.S. Bopanna is new Chief Justice of Gauhati HC

New Delhi: The Union Government has notified the appointment of Chief Justices for five High Courts of the country.

Karnataka High Court Judge, Justice Ajjikuttira Somaiah Bopanna has been appointed as the Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court. The office of Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court fell vacant upon retirement of Justice Ajit Singh.

Born on May 20, 1959, Justice A.S. Bopanna is the son of A.N. Somaiah, former MLC from Kodagu. He enrolled as an advocate on Nov. 21, 1984, practised in civil, constitutional, company and service matters in the High Court as well as the Civil and Labour Courts.

He also worked as Legal Advisor to Central Public Sector Undertakings and as Additional Central Government Standing Counsel from 1999 to 2005. He was appointed as Additional Judge of Karnataka High Court on Jan. 6, 2006 and became a permanent Judge on Mar.1, 2007.
