Justice Dipak Misra sworn-in as Chief Justice of India

New Delhi: Justice Dipak Misra, who led the Supreme Court Bench that confirmed death to four convicts in the Nirbhaya gang-rape case in May this year, was sworn-in as the 45th Chief Justice of India (CJI).

He was administered oath of office by President Ram Nath Kovind at a brief ceremony held at Darbar Hall of  Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Chief Justice Misra will hold office for the next 13 months, till Oct. 2, 2018. As per the established practice, Chief Justice J.S. Khehar had last month recommended Justice Misra’s elevation as his successor.

Justice Misra, 64, assumes office following the retirement of Justice J.S. Khehar as the  CJI yesterday.

Profile: Justice Dipak Misra was born on Oct.3, 1953. He was enrolled as an Advocate on Feb.14, 1977 and practiced in Constitutional, Civil, Criminal, Revenue, Service and Sales Tax matters in the Orissa High Court and the Service Tribunal. He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Orissa High Court on January, 1996 and transferred to the Madhya Pradesh High Court on Mar.3, 1997. He became permanent Judge on Dec.19, 1997. Justice Misra assumed charge of the office of Chief Justice, Patna High Court on Dec. 23, 2009 and charge of the office of the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court on May 24, 2010. He was elevated as a Supreme Court Judge  on Oct. 10, 2011.
