Mysuru: K.R. Police have busted a gang which was involved in cheating and relieving elderly women of gold chains, with the arrest of three persons. The Police have recovered 292 gm of gold jewellery worth Rs. 10 lakh and a Tata Indigo car and three motorcycles from them.
The arrested have been identified as Cheluvarayi alias Cheluvaraju, 43, a resident of Koorgalli in city and a native of Ganamgur in Srirangapatna taluk, Manjula alias Geetha alias Manji alias Kavya alias Dodda Manji, 35, a resident of Wodeyara Kallalli in Bengaluru rural district and a native of Kodalli in Hosur taluk of Krishnagiri district in Tamil Nadu and Manju alias Manja alias Thittu, 30, of M.G. Layout, Kallalli, Mandya.
On May 14 at about 8.30 am, the trio, who targeted Bhagyamma, resident of Medarakeri near Nanjumalige, had relieved her mangala sutra chain when she was buying vegetables at Nanjumalige by conning her after accusing her of theft.
Under the guise of taking her to the Police Station, two of the accused first took the elderly lady in an auto and later in a car and relieved her of gold chain worth about Rs. 2 lakh after sprinkling some powder that made her lose senses.
Following a complaint by Bhagyamma, K.R. Police, who began investigation, picked up the trio near Agrahara.
During interrogation, they confessed to the crime and also revealed that they were involved in 10 such crimes, including 3 each in K.R., Vidyaranyapuram and Devaraja Police Station limits and one in Vijayanagar Police Station limits, following which gold jewellery worth Rs. 10 lakh, a Tata Indigo car and three motorcycles, used for the crimes, were seized from them.
The trio also have cheating cases pending against them in various Police Stations in and around Bengaluru.
DCP N. Rudramuni and K.R. ACP C. Malik guided Police Inspector B.S. Prakash, Probationary PSI Sunil and staff in the nabbing and seizure operation.
