Kabini Dam safe: CNNL says old seepage videos circulated

June 22, 2025

Mysuru: The Cauvery Neeravari Nigama Limited (CNNL) has clarified that the Kabini Reservoir in H.D. Kote, Mysuru district, is safe.

In a press release, the CNNL Managing Director addressed concerns raised by certain visual media outlets, stating that outdated videos on the Kabini Dam were being circulated to spread misleading information and cause unnecessary panic among the public.

To ensure transparency, the Superintending Engineer of the Varuna Division was directed to verify the claims and submit a report along with video evidence regarding the Dam’s safety.

Following a thorough inspection, officials confirmed that the current water level is 2,278 feet, with 15.80 tmcft of water stored. The viral videos circulating on social media are several years old and depict minor seepage, which is normal and poses no threat.

The Dam Safety Review Team (DSRT) inspected the site on May 20, 2022, and the Dam Safety Review Panel (DSRP) conducted another assessment on Aug. 26, 2024. Based on expert recommendations, necessary maintenance work has been planned. As the reservoir is presently receiving fresh inflows, the repair work is scheduled for October and November. Contrary to misleading reports, there is no excessive leakage or structural risk.

The Government has taken all necessary measures to ensure the safety and upkeep of the dam, and there is no cause for concern, the press release added.
