Laser Cystolithotripsy at Manipal Hospital to remove large urinary bladder stone

November 26, 2023

Mysore/Mysuru: Manipal Hospital Mysuru successfully removed a large urinary bladder stone measuring 5×5.5x6cms, through Laser Cystolithotripsy.

Kamal (name changed), a 40-year-old resident of Mysuru, consulted Dr. T.P. Dinesh Kumar, Consultant – Urology, Andrology and Kidney Transplant Surgeon, Manipal Hospital, Mysuru, with pain and burning sensation while passing urine (micturition), blood in the urine (haematuria) and obstruction of urine flow.

After careful assessment and diagnostic tests, Dr. Dinesh Kumar identified a large urinary bladder stone as the cause of Kamal’s symptoms and advised him to undergo surgery to get the stone removed.

Kamal, who was already aware of his condition for some time, had consulted several hospitals before visiting Manipal Hospital. He, however, was sceptical about undergoing open                                                                       surgery due to extended recovery times and heightened post-operative discomfort.

Addressing a press conference at Pathrakartara Bhavan in city recently, Dr. Dinesh Kumar said, “Laser Cystolithotripsy is an advanced minimally invasive technique. The procedure uses laser energy to achieve precise stone fragmentation. With this approach, it is possible to crush the bladder stone into small mud-like particles, remove it through the urethra and pass the particles through regular urine passage, without the need to cut open the abdomen. With this targeted laser energy,                                                          there is minimal damage to surrounding tissues and the recovery is faster.”
