December 14, 2022

Mysore/Mysuru: A female leopard cub, aged between 8 and 9 months, has been trapped inside a case which was placed by the Forest Department at an agricultural field near Kabini backwaters on Monday.

On Sunday, a leopard had killed a calf belonging to Javaregowda of Badanakuppe village near Antharasanthe. The Forest Department officials, who inspected the spot, had placed a cage to trap the leopard following pressure from the villagers and on Monday, a female leopard cub was found trapped inside the cage.

Range Forest Officer (RFO) K. Prasannakumar, Deputy RFO P. Chandan and staff,   who rushed to the spot, shifted the cage along with the cub near the office of the RFO, where the leopard cub was provided first-aid.

The cub is healthy and after receiving directions from their senior officers, the cub will be released inside the forest area. The experts’ opinion that the cub is capable of hunting to feed itself as it was about 9-month-old and can be released anywhere inside the forest has been conveyed to the higher officers.

Meanwhile, the villagers have stated that there are two adult leopards prowling near the villages and urged the Forest officials to place more cages to trap them.

The villagers said that the Forest Department was not taking any steps to capture the leopards which were resulting in the leopards killing their livestock and causing huge loss to them. The Forest officials have assured the villagers of placing more cages to trap the leopards soon.
