Sir,
I am writing to you as a concerned citizen and nature enthusiast who has been deeply disturbed by the growing menace of garbage dumping along the tank bund of Lingambudhi Lake in Mysuru. Lingambudhi Lake, built by the Maharajas and known for its rich biodiversity and scenic beauty, is now facing serious threats due to unchecked waste disposal by residents from nearby layouts. The situation not only undermines the heritage and ecological value of the Lake but also poses risks to the health of the local community and the migratory birds that visit the Lake every year.
Once known for its serene environment, lush greenery, and as a thriving habitat for native and migratory birds, the Lake is now facing neglect and irresponsible civic behaviour.
The tank bund, lined with century-old trees and rich vegetation, has sadly become a dumping ground for household and construction waste. Residents from nearby areas are reportedly disposing of garbage illegally along the bund and even near heritage trees.
This illegal dumping not only spoils the area’s natural beauty but also poses a severe threat to the local ecology, public health and the biodiversity that Lingambudhi Lake supports. Birds that migrate thousands of miles to nest here now face an increasingly polluted and hostile environment.
Despite the Lake falling under the jurisdiction of the Srirampura Town Panchayat, proper waste management and enforcement mechanisms appear to be missing or inadequate. The Panchayat must immediately install waste bins, put up warning boards, initiate regular cleaning drives and penalise violators.
Public awareness campaigns and community involvement are also crucial in preserving this ecological gem. I appeal to the authorities concerned, environmental groups and responsible citizens of Mysuru to come together to protect Lingambudhi Lake before it’s too late.
