Make all pedestrian crossing signal lights functional

March 28, 2024

Sir,

It has been observed with grave concern that most of the pedestrian crossing traffic lights installed across the city, along with those for vehicles, are non-functional. The purpose behind their installation becomes perplexing when they fail to serve any practical use. Have these lights been installed merely for aesthetic purposes, devoid of any functionality?

It appears that little consideration has been given to pedestrians’ needs during the installation of these traffic signals. Are they intended solely for motorists, neglecting the safety and convenience of pedestrians?

Pedestrians often find themselves vulnerable to the whims of motorists when attempting to cross the road at non-functional pedestrian crossing signals. Motorists, driven by impatience, frequently disregard pedestrian safety, crossing the line even before the lights turn green, thereby endangering those waiting to cross the road safely.

Numerous accidents at road junctions can be attributed to non-functional pedestrian crossing lights, highlighting the urgent need for corrective action.

Hence, I earnestly request the authorities concerned to prioritise the functionality of all pedestrian crossing lights. This will ensure the safety of pedestrians and enable them to cross the road securely.
