99th convocation of University of Mysore
Mysuru: Chairman of All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi, Prof. Anil D. Sahasrabudhe wanted policy makers to give thrust for Industry-Academic collaboration as such initiatives is a must for overall development of the country.
Delivering the 99th Convocation Address of University of Mysore (UoM) at Crawford Hall in city this morning, he said all varsities must focus on engaging with industry by having partnership for better understanding of faculty and students.
“Universities must encourage internship for students, besides setting up laboratories with industries and arranging training for improvement of their job and communication skills that suits the industry in the market driven world. Apart from this, varsities must also sponsor training for faculties in industries on summer and other vacations to enhance their knowledge and capacity,” he said.
To encourage talented children, varsities must provide scholarship, prizes and awards for deserving students to bring out the best for the benefit of the common good.
Emphasising the universities must be vibrant with student-teacher friendly activities, Sahasrabudhe wanted universities to give thrust to innovation and research, quality education and teaching methods to come out best in this cutting-edge technological development. “There are a lot of examples where universities have produced innovative patents, research publications and social mooring,” he added.
Highlighting the role of graduates in the nation building activities, he asked every graduate to become the catalyst for bringing changes in social and economic sector apart from focusing on their family and private life in order to build peace, prosperous, liveable and lovable world,” he said.
Sahasrabudhe also advised varsities to make use of the best from alumni of their educational institutions who have settled abroad and achieved greater heights. “Varsities must also concentrate on connecting with national and international universities and utilise the best of social media and other communication and technological tools for betterment of students, faculty and progress of the country,” he said.
Speaking after receiving the Honoris Causa (honorary doctorate) Degree, Sri Ma.Ni. Pra. Karivrashabha Deshikendra Shivayogishwara Mahaswamiji of Somanakatte Sri Kadasiddeshwara Mutt, Nonavinakere in Tiptur said that he was delighted to receive the doctorate from this century- old University which was built by Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar and for honouring him recognising his spiritual services to the society. Other honorary doctorate degree awardee Mata Amritanandamayi, President of Mata Amritanandamayi Math and Chancellor of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Kerala, skipped today’s ceremony.
Degrees to be conferred
In all, 28,163 candidates will be conferred with different degrees at the convocation ceremony to be held till evening and among them, 18,127 are women candidates and 10,036 are men candidates. Over 384 candidates will receive Ph.D. degrees in various subjects and here 166 are women candidates and 218 are men candidates.
Over 368 medals and 182 prizes will be shared by 206 candidates in all the five faculties and among them, 135 are women. 8,241 candidates will be conferred with Master’s Degrees and among them, 4,928 are women candidates. 19,538 candidates will be conferred with Bachelor’s Degrees and 13,033 are women candidates.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. G. Hemantha Kumar, Registrar Lingaraja Gandhi, Registrar (Evaluation) Mahadevan, Finance Officer Prof H. Mahadevappa and others were present.
