Man sentenced to life for killing wife

Mysore/Mysuru: A city court has sentenced a man to life imprisonment on charges of murdering his wife.

Basavaiah alias Basavashetty of Kergalli in Jayapura Police Station limits of Mysuru taluk is the one who has been sentenced.

Basavaiah had married one Nagarathna about 17 years ago and the couple had two daughters from marriage.

Suspecting his wife’s fidelity, Basavaiah, who had turned alcoholic, picked up a quarrel with Nagarathna on the morning of Oct. 28, 2018 and in a fit of rage, he poured kerosene on her and set her ablaze.

Nagarathna, who suffered serious burn injuries, was rushed to K.R. Hospital, where she breathed her last on Nov. 2, 2018.

The Jayapura Police, who arrested Basavaiah, investigated the case and filed a charge-sheet against him under sections 498(a) and 302 of IPC, in the Court.

The city’s Fifth Additional District and Sessions Court Judge Ashwini Vijay Siriyannavar, who heard the case on Jan. 27, held Basavaiah guilty of the charges and sentenced him to life imprisonment. Besides, the Judge also imposed a penalty of Rs. 5,000 on Basavaiah.

Public Prosecutor Nagappa C. Naakman argued on behalf of the State.
