Sir,
I wish to draw attention to the increasing number of building plan violations across Mysuru and the lack of effective enforcement by the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC).
In many cases, building plans are sanctioned as per the prescribed rules and during construction, mandatory setbacks are violated, parking spaces are eliminated, unauthorised basements are constructed and additional floors are added beyond the approved limits. Such violations are often visible throughout the construction period, yet timely action is not taken.
Equally worrying is the rapid proliferation of commercial establishments such as cafes, bakeries, restaurants and offices in residential buildings.
These create traffic congestion, parking problems, noise pollution and additional strain on civic infrastructure, adversely affecting the quality of life of residents.
The widespread nature of these violations has created a public perception of a nexus between certain landlords, officials and politicians.
Whether justified or not, such perceptions can only be dispelled through strict enforcement and accountability by the City Corporation.
Citizens are entitled to ask how these violations escape the notice of officials responsible for monitoring construction activities. Buildings do not come up overnight and deviations from sanctioned plans are easily identifiable during construction.
The Supreme Court has repeatedly emphasised that unauthorised constructions should not be tolerated and that planning laws must be enforced strictly.
I therefore urge the Mysuru City Corporation and Urban Development authorities to conduct regular inspections, act promptly against violators and fix responsibility on officials who fail to enforce the law.
Only firm and impartial action can protect Mysuru’s planned development and preserve its quality of life.
