Sir,
This is with reference to the news item in Star of Mysore dated Apr. 1 regarding the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) introducing a motor vehicle cess in the Property Tax, Rs. 500 for four-wheeler owners, Rs. 200 for three-wheeler owners and Rs. 100 for two-wheeler owners.
It is not correct on the part of MCC to impose a cess on every citizen. Most two-wheeler owners park their vehicles inside their houses. Many three-wheeler autorickshaw drivers live in small houses and are daily wage earners supporting their families. Imposing such a tax on them is unfair.
As for four-wheeler owners, the Corporation authorities may consider levying cess only on those who park their vehicles on roads or footpaths and not on those who park within their own compounds.
Traffic in Mysuru city is steadily increasing, yet cattle such as cows and horses can still be seen occupying many roads, including main streets in the heart of the city.
At times, these animals even lie down in the middle of the road, obstructing the free flow of traffic. Despite several complaints from road users, no action appears to have been taken.
Why can’t the Corporation authorities, with the help of the Police, clear these cattle from the roads and ensure smooth movement of vehicles?
Will the MCC impose a cess or tax on cattle owners who allow their animals to roam freely on the roads?
It is hoped that the Mysuru City Corporation will act more sensibly before implementing such rules or cess on property owners.
