Mysuru: MP Pratap Simha, taking strong exception to the way electronic media is functioning today, said that in the race for TRP rating, most of the channels are indulging in character assassination of leaders and other prominent personalities, which must be stopped.

He was speaking at the Press Day (Patrika Dinacharane) celebrations organised by Mysuru District Journalists Association here at Rajendra Kalamandir on Ramanuja Road, here this morning and said unlike the print media, which checks its stories before publishing, the electronic media, in the race for breaking news, do not bother to check facts.

“The media today is living in an illusory world. I myself have been a journalist for 13 years and I have never made personal comments in my columns,” he said.

Simha said that instead of talking about his contribution as an MP like bringing double track between Mysuru-Bengaluru, re-launch of Mysore Airport and the development of ring road, the media was indulging in character assassination.

Senior journalist and Media Secretary to Chief Minister K.V. Prabhakara said that gone were the days when young journalists would look up to seniors who did not hesitate to teach them the nuances of journalism. “These days the upcoming journalists just do not have the time for the veteran journalists. They do not even know how to ask questions with clarity,” he regretted.’
