Mysuru: Observing that all Supreme Court Judgements are historic, Karnataka High Court Judge Krishna S. Dikshit said that minor judgements given in respect of individuals too are very much significant to the society.

He was speaking at the lecture series on ‘ The Constitution of India – An analysis,’ organised by city’s Parampare organisation at Nadabramha Sangeetha  Sabha on JLB Road here on Saturday.

Pointing out that political parties that never came together to tackle natural calamities like floods, drought, famine etc., however came together when the Supreme Court ruled that all the candidates contesting the polls should submit affidavits on their criminal background, if any, during the period of six months before filing of the nomination, Justice Krishna Dikshit said that the SC gave this verdict in the interests of the people. Noting that the Supreme Court is an institution formed under the Constitution, he said that the concerns of the common man was foremost for the country’s Apex Court. 

Recalling an incident during the Emergency period when the then Union Government headed by Indira Gandhi had sought certain amendments to the Constitution,Justice Dikshit said that the SC ruled that the amendments must be made only within the purview of the law and without disturbing the fundamental aspirations of the Constitution.

Stating that while the first four amendments to the Indian Constitution granted more powers to the Legislature and the Executive, the first 10 amendments to the American Constitution gave more teeth to the rights of voters.  Making a reference to other countries where polls are marred by rampant violence, murders and other heinous acts, he said that, however in our country, the party which gains majority is allowed to come to power smoothly.
