Sir,
Apropos the news item “45 DLs impounded on single day for using mobile while driving” (SOM dated Mar. 12) should act as an eye-opener and a deterrent for habitual mobile phone users while driving.
The use of mobiles while driving causes nuisance to other road-users also. While using mobile, the 4-wheel drivers will be moving slowly ahead of us, because they will be using one hand for both steering and gear shifting. This action will block the smooth flow of the traffic, irritating the drivers behind them.
While using only one hand for driving, they are unable to use the side indicators, thus causing a confusion for other road-users while taking a turn.
Two-wheeler riders will be either holding the mobile in one hand or will have the mobile precariously placed between their shoulder and the head. This is a dangerous mode of riding, since the rider can have only a part view of the road. The side views are totally blocked, thereby inviting accidents. While using the mobile, two-wheeler riders balance his vehicle handle-bar with one hand, thereby restricting the use of side indicators.
Hope with the stringent Police action, better sense will prevail upon compulsive rule breakers.
