The excessive use of mobile phones has become a common sight among both the younger and older generations.

Whether it is Police personnel on duty, medical professionals, office-goers, shopkeepers or commuters, many are frequently seen engaged with their phones even while performing their duties or moving in public places.

A particularly dangerous practice is noticed among two-wheeler riders who attempt to ride while holding a mobile phone between their neck and shoulder while speaking.

This unsafe act is highly prone to accidents. Some car drivers also text or talk while driving and pedestrians often cross busy roads while looking at their phones.

Another growing trend among youngsters is the use of ear pods while walking or travelling, speaking loudly and remaining unaware of their surroundings, which may lead to accidents.

A simple precaution would be for riders to park their vehicles safely to the side of the road before attending calls, especially during emergencies. Mobile usage should ideally be restricted to appropriate intervals rather than during work or travel.

There is a need for greater public awareness of responsible mobile usage. Law-enforcing authorities, Police personnel, teachers in schools and administrators in offices can initiate awareness programmes highlighting the ill-effects of excessive mobile dependence and the importance of disciplined usage in the interest of public safety and personal health.
