Mother fails to rescue daughter, both killed in landslide

August 11, 2019

Madikeri: A terrible landslide owing to incessant rain took away the lives of a mother and her daughter at Thora village in Virajpet taluk on Friday evening.

The most heart-rending part was that the mother who tried to rescue her daughter failed with the two getting killed. The deceased are  Mamata (40) and her daughter Likhita (15).

Mamata and Likhita were in the house along with another family member Paramesh when the intensity of the rain increased alarmingly.

Paramesh was said to have gone out to call the occupants of the house upstairs to come down to his house on the ground floor for safety purpose. Immediately, the hillock closeby began to cave in and the land slide hit the house. Mamata could have come out immediately, but instead went back to bring Likhita together when the metal almirah reportedly fell on them along with the debris and the two were killed. Mamata sacrificed her life in trying to save her daughter.

Son saves friend: Mamata’s son Darshan helplessly watched his house getting crushed when he just returned home. Noticing that his mother was dying under the debris, Darshan bravely saved his friend Satish who was also trapped under the debris.

Height of greediness: When the mother of Mamata took the two bodies for cremation, the caretakers there allegedly demanded Rs. 8,000 to cremate the bodies indicating the height of greediness even in misery.

Pet’s love: The injured pet dog of Mamata which was rescued yesterday now sits gloomy with surviving members of the family unable to express its sorrow.
