Mumbai rains: City limping back to normalcy

August 30, 2017

Storm moves towards Gujarat; ‘Red alert’ sounded for heavy rain in Konkan, Goa, Madhya Pradesh and Central Maharashtra

Mumbai: After three people, including two children, were killed when a house collapsed in Mumbai due to heavy rains which lashed Mumbai last night, the city is limping back to normalcy with local trains and flight operations commencing from today morning.

Local train services were paralysed yesterday because of flooded tracks and people were stranded for hours at Stations and offices.

Five teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed to rescue people. The Navy has divers and choppers are on standby and its cadets ran food camps besides arranging shelter for people stuck in areas like Colaba, Worli and Ghatkopar.

Mumbai’s famous dabbawalas, who deliver tiffins to offices, will not be operating today as they were not able to collect the lunch boxes which they had delivered yesterday, said their spokesperson. Power outages were reported in several parts of the city.

The storm has now moved towards Gujarat and the MET office has forecast heavy rains in the State in the next two days.
