Mysore Medical College gets 50 more MBBS, 19 PG seats

October 23, 2025

Mysuru, Oct. 23 (RK&BCT)- In line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Independence Day 2024 pledge to create 75,000 new medical seats over five years, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved 10,650 additional MBBS seats for the academic year 2024-25.

This expansion is part of a larger national strategy to improve access to medical education. The establishment of 41 new medical colleges has now increased India’s total number of medical institutions to 816.

Among the beneficiaries is the century-old Mysore Medical College and Research Institute (MMC&RI), one of Karnataka’s most prestigious Government-run medical institutions.

50 additional seats

For the 2025 academic year, the NMC has sanctioned 50 additional MBBS seats and 19 postgraduate (PG) seats, taking the total to 250 MBBS and 172 PG seats. The B.Sc. Nursing intake has also been raised significantly from 100 to 250 seats.

Located in the heart of Mysuru, MMC&RI is spread across 90 acres encompassing a 15-acre college campus, 15 acres housing K.R. Hospital and Cheluvamba Hospital and a 65-acre campus on KRS Road.

The latter includes the Trauma Care Centre, Princess Krishnajammanni Super Speciality Hospital, Princess Krishnajammanni Tuberculosis and Chest Diseases (PKTB&CD) Hospital, Kidwai Cancer Hospital, new boys’ and girls’ hostels and the upcoming Institute of Nephro Urology Hospital.

Additionally, plans are underway for a new NIMHANS campus on 20 acres in Varuna Constituency, further strengthening the region’s mental health infrastructure.

The MMC&RI currently offers a wide range of courses, including MBBS, MS/MD postgraduate programmes, MCh/DM (DM (Doctorate of Medicine) and MCh (Master of Chirurgiae) super-speciality courses, B.Sc. Allied Sciences, B.Sc. Nursing, paramedical courses and a school of nursing.

The institute is also preparing to launch new super-speciality programmes — DM Nephrology (2 seats), MCh Urology (2 seats), DrNB Surgical Oncology (2 seats) and DrNB Surgical Gastroenterology (2 seats) — in addition to its existing MCh Plastic Surgery (3 seats) course.

“These additions will open new avenues for bright and deserving students from modest backgrounds, offering greater access to advanced medical education and specialised training,” said Dr. K. Satish, Principal, MMC&RI, speaking to Star of Mysore.

He added that the expansion underscores the institution’s enduring commitment to academic excellence and public service. Having marked its centenary last year, MMC&RI continues to uphold its legacy of producing generations of medical professionals who serve in leading institutions across India and abroad.
