‘Mysore University has always encouraged sports activities’

VC Prof. Hemantha Kumar inaugurates 3-day All-India Inter-University Kho-Kho (Women) Championship

“University of Mysore (UoM) has always given importance to sports activities too along with academic activities and thus, provided a platform for sports achievers,” said UoM Vice-Chancellor Prof. G. Hemantha Kumar.

He was speaking after inaugurating the 3-day All India Inter-University Kho-Kho (Women) Championship  for the year 2021-22, organised by the Association of Indian Universities, New Delhi and the Department of Physical Education (DPE), UoM, at the UoM Sports Pavilion here yesterday.

“The UoM, which was founded during Mysore Kings, has a history of 105 years. The Mysore Maharajas had given 800 acres for UoM; out of which 100 acres are used for sports purpose. Maharaja’s College Grounds, Pavilion Grounds, Oval Grounds and SDNR Wadiyar Cricket Grounds are reserved for sports activities. All the Vice-Chancellors so far, including myself, have been giving importance to sports. Hence, hundreds of students have represented the University and won prizes at State and National-level Sports,” he said.

UoM DPE Director Dr. Krishnaiah, who spoke on the occasion, informed that a total of 16 teams are taking part in the Tournament including Mysuru’s UoM, University of Calicut and Warangal’s Kakatiya University in South Zone Division; Aurangabad’s Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, University of Mumbai, Gujarat University and Kolhapur’s Shivaji University in West Zone; Jalandhar’s Lovely Professional University, Rohtak’s Maharshi Dayanand University and Chandigarh’s Punjab University in North Zone and Odisha’s Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (formerly KIIT University), Bhubaneswar’s Utkal University, Uttar Pradesh’s Veer Bahadur Singh Purvanchal University (formerly Purvanchal University), West Bengal’s University of Kalyani in East Zone.

UoM Registrar Prof. R. Shivappa, Finance Officer Sangeetha Gajanana Bhat and Syndicate Member Ningaraj Gowda too were present during the inaugural.

UoM wins first match

In the inaugural game, excellent all-round game by K.R. Tejaswini (4 min & 4.40 m & 1 pt) and L. Monika (1.30 m & 5 points), helped hosts University of Mysore to begin their Pool ‘B’ league encounter with a 10-5 & an innings win over Kurukshethra University, on the inaugural day of the Championships 2021-22.

University of Mysore: 10 (K.R. Tejaswini – 4m & 4.40m, 1 pt, L. Monika – 1.30m & 5 points) bt Kurukshetra University: 5 (Rakhi-1.30m & 1 points) by 5 points & an innings. (ht-10-2).
