Mysuru Water Supply and Sewerage Board need of the hour

March 25, 2021

Sir,

This refers to the news item titled ‘High time for professional body to take over water supply’ (SOM dated Mar. 20).

Vani Vilas Water Works (VVWW), which is more than 100 years old and coming under the aegis of Mysuru City Corporation, has served its purpose. Mysuru and its population has grown at a rapid pace in the last few years and VVWW is simply unable to manage and distribute water equitably to all Wards in the city, let alone the MUDA Layouts.

I stay in SS Nagar, Bannimantap ‘B’ Layout and we get water for 2-3 hours on alternate days. Go to VVWW, you’ll find any number of people at any given time with all sorts of grievances.

With innumerable illegal connections (encouraged and patronised), unpaid bills in crores and no action taken, wastage and leaking pipes, meters not functioning and consumers’ comfortably paying minimum amount for years or meters malfunctioning, resulting in inflated bills, water tankers mafia in some Wards in collusion with Corporators, corrupt Water Inspectors and other staff collecting bribes for favours is how we can describe the state of affairs in VVWW now. Crumbling UGD also needs total overhauling.

The demand of MP, MLAs and others to the Chief Minister to create Mysuru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (MWSSB) on the lines of BWSSB in Bengaluru is the need of the hour and cannot be postponed further. That our Deputy Commissioner is also in support of forming an autonomous body is welcome and should push the cause.

Mubasher Mirza, Bannimantap ‘B’ Layout, 21.3.2021
