National Consumer Day: ‘Rural folk are unaware of Consumer Protection Act’

Mysuru: Marking National Consumer Day, District Administration, Zilla Panchayat and Department of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs had organised a programme at Nanjaraja Bahadur Choultry on Vinoba Road here yesterday.

Speaking on the occasion, District Consumer Grievances Redressal Forum Member M.C. Devakumar observed that Consumer Protection Act was being utilised well in urban areas but not in villages. 

He recalled that the Consumer Court was established to provide justice to aggrieved Consumers. He said that the National Consumer Protection Act, 1986 was amended by the Union Government in August, 2019 but has not been implemented as the Gazette notification has not been issued by the                                               concerned Department. 

He contended that a consumer has the right to get any product with good quality at competitive price and added that any grievance in that context can be referred to the Consumer Court.

A demonstration was organised by various Departments on detection of food adulteration, seeds and fertilisers, pharma products, Weights and Measures, rights of women and children, petroleum products quality and milk products.

Department of Food and Civil Supplies Joint Director P. Shivanna, District Government Employees Association President H.K. Ramu, Mysore Grahaka Parishat Member Ramnath and others were present.

An interaction was also held on consumer grievances.
