“NE MUKHYA RASTE??” — How daft can you be?

December 2, 2018

Sir,

When I moved into Jayalakshmipuram III Block some 18  years back, I noticed that the street in front of my house did not have a name. The street-name board just said “Block III”! (Anyone would know that it is not a street name but a locality name.) Having failed to get a “Namakarana” for my street with the help the previous MCC Commissioners, MLA, Corporators and the area engineers, informally I gave the street its logical name as 3rd Main as it was the street previous to 4th Main and also right in line with the 3rd Main of Block II.

However, my efforts to name the street officially continued (it goes without saying that I failed) and finally in early 2018, the new boards appeared. Sadly, many of the boards were error-ridden except that the names of the Corporator and the Legislator were correct. The street in front of my house was named as “NE MUKHYA RASTE.” How daft can you be?

Now in November 2018, a fresh set of boards appeared with new names of the Corporator and Legislator but with the same errors continuing. Having failed to get it corrected through the new local Corporator, I finally decided that self-help is the best way. A 15-minute job with the help of an able assistant did the trick. (see photo)

I do hope that I will not be prosecuted for vandalising public property.
