New walkers’ path planned at Kukkarahalli Lake: DC

August 20, 2017

Mysuru: If everything goes according to plan, the pristine Kukkarahalli Lake will soon have a new walkers path, said Deputy Commissioner D. Randeep.

Speaking to Star of Mysore, here yesterday after inspecting various development works in the Lake along with MCC officials and NGOs, he said, “Kukkarahalli Lake has lot of migratory birds. The two islands in the Lake house many of them. However, the walking path which runs alongside is causing a lot of harm to the movement of birds.”

According to Randeep, a decision has been taken to build a fresh walkers path along the periphery of the Lake, a little distance away from the island so as not to disturb the birds.

He said that Rs. 1.35 crore had been earmarked for taking up various development works. The accumulation of silt, which was causing a lot of problems by blocking flow of rainwater from different canals leading to the Lake had been removed. There was good rainfall in the last two days. Because of the removal of silt, there was free flow of this rainwater into the Lake, he added.

Earlier, the underground drainage water was mixing up with the storm water drains polluting the Lake. Now, it has been cleared, he said and asked the officials of Mysore University and MCC to come out with a master plan to develop a bio-diversity park.

All the 13 gates around the Lake from where the rainwater flows into it must have meshes to stop the flow of sewage water mixing with rainwater. The whole area must be covered with chain linking fence to prevent the grazing of cattle and stop people from cutting trees and twigs for firewood, he suggested.

MGP members, Mysore University and City Corporation officials, naturalists and environmentalists were all present.
