‘Ninaada Griha Sangeeta’ series: Hindustani Classical Vocal Concert by Dr. Dattatreya Velankar on Sunday

Mysore/Mysuru: As part of the ‘Ninaada Griha Sangeeta’ series by Ranjani Memorial Trust, a vocal concert by Dr. Dattatreya Velankar will be held at #37, ‘Ninaada,’ Rishabh Siddhi Layout, Kergalli, on Nov. 26 at 6 pm. It will be the 10th concert of the series.

Dr. Dattatreya Velankar will be accompanied by Meghashyam Keshav on tabla and Pt. Veerabhadraiah Hiremath on harmonium.

Surmani Dr. Dattatreya Velankar is an accomplished Hindustani classical vocalist, teacher, academician and the Founder of Shadja Kala Kendra, Bengaluru.

He is a disciple of Gwalior-Kirana Gharana maestro Pt. Vinayak Torvi and Keertanacharya Lakshmandas Velankar. For more than 3 decades, he has pursued rigorous training under Torviji, who has blessed Dattatreya with Ganda Bandan Deeksha.

Dattatreya Velankar is an ‘A’ grade All India Radio (AIR) and Doordarshan artiste. He is an Empanelled Artiste of Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Government of India.

He has performed at many numerous music festivals across India and abroad. He was conferred with ‘Surmani’ title by the Sursingar Samsad, Mumbai. He is also conferred with ‘Bhajan Bhushan’ title by the Maharashtra Association, Chennai.

A speciality of Dattatreya is that he performs both Hindustani Classical Vocal and Katha Keertan. He has been performing many Santavani concerts.

Dattatreya Velankar has completed his Ph.D in Katha Keertan from Jain University, Bengaluru, under the guidance of Vidushi Dr. Meera Rajaram Pranesh. He is conferred with ‘Vidwat’ in Vocal Music from the Government of Karnataka and ‘Sangeet Prabhakar’ from Prayag Sangeet Sameethi, Allahabad.

Dattatreya Velankar had delivered several Lecture-Demonstrations and Katha Keertan including at SOAS, University of Central London.

Dattatreya has been teaching classical music for the past 2 decades. He is a visiting faculty of LearnQuest Academy of Music, Waltham MA USA.

Dattatreya is one of the founders of Shadja Kala Kendra Trust, Bengaluru – An institution dedicated to the age-old ‘Guru-Shishya Parampara’ of Hindustani Classical Music and he is training several students. He is working as guest faculty at the Lakshminarayana Global Centre of Excellence started by Padma Bhushan Dr. L. Subramanian and Padma Shree Kavita Krishnamurty, Vishwakarma University, Pune.

Dattatreya has penned several books. Important among them are Sangeet Mala, Part 1, 2 and Part 3, outlining the basics of Hindustani Classical Music in a 2- part series, with accompanying CD. Hindustani Sangeet Praveshika (a compilation of compositions) “Swami Vivekananda’s Contributions to Indian Classical Music”  and ‘The Splendour of Katha Keertan’ book on theory of Katha Keertan are the two other important books penned by him.
