Flower pots, clean walls, decorated benches replace stinky footpath

Mysuru: Finally, there seems to be relief from the foul smell of urine emanating from the compound wall of Mysuru Medical College and Research Institute (MMC&RI) along a stretch of footpath on New Sayyaji Rao Road, which had turned unsightly due to regular public urination. The MCC, led by Commissioner M.K. Savitha, has now sanitised and cleaned the area.

The walls have been painted with awareness messages on cleanliness, besides placing flower pots to beautify the spot. To discourage public urination, officials have also instructed that the timings of the nearby public toilets be extended.

For years, stretch along Dhanvantri Road, from Janatha Bazar Medical Store to Sayyaji Rao Road and from Sayyaji Rao Road-Dhanvantri Road junction to Government Ayurveda College Circle, has been a spot for public urination.

The persistent practice caused inconvenience and embarrassment to motorists and pedestrians, particularly patients visiting K.R. Hospital. During the cleaning drive, shopkeepers and the public too participated.

80 GVPs

Meanwhile, the MCC, which has expedited its 80th Independence Day cleanliness campaign with a resolve to clear waste from 80 Garbage Vulnerable Points (GVPs) ahead of the I-Day celebrations, has cleared nine tonnes of waste with the involvement of more than 125 MCC officers and Pourakarmikas.

Six tonnes of waste was cleared near Mysore Ananthaswamy Park in Krishnamurthypuram, Ward No. 60, under the jurisdiction of the MCC Zone-2 office, involving 60 personnel.

Two tonnes of waste were cleared from T. Narasipur Main Road under MCC Zone-9, involving more than 30 personnel. Another one tonne of waste was cleared from the area behind Holy Saint School at Gayathripuram, involving over 35 personnel.

The MCC has issued a warning that the GVPs cleaned during the drive will be regularly monitored. As per rules, penalties will be imposed on offenders who dump waste in public places or urinate in the open. Many ex-Corporators, including former Mayor Purushotham, participated in the drives at their respective wards.

MCC Commissioner M.K. Savitha, MCC Zone-2 Assistant Commissioner Girish, Zone-6 Assistant Commissioner Prathibha, Assistant Executive Engineers Meenakshi and K.S. Mruthyunjaya, Environment Engineer Mythri, Health Inspectors Basavaraju and Manjukumar, supervisors, pourakarmikas, shop owners, roadside vendors and residents were present during the cleanliness campaign.
