Nostalgically Speaking — 1: Remembering Dr. K.B. Subbaiah

July 25, 2020

Sir,

I browsed through your nostalgic write-up (Abracadabra dated 19.7.2020) about your brother Dr. K.B. Subbaiah, who happened to be our neighbour. I never had the opportunity to meet him personally, though, because I was working at that time as a lecturer in Mangalore University.

However, I got to know quite a bit about your brother from my father late Abdul Karim, who happened to be his patient for a couple of months during August and September. And it was my younger brother Shakeel Ahmed, who introduced my father to your brother for treatment of acute chronic bronchitis in August that year. Both of them had very fine words for your brother — his professional competence as well as his humane qualities. He never charged any fees at all.

I believe Dr. Subbaiah had promised even to get my father rid of chronic bronchitis for good by effective treatment at his home clinic in Yadavagiri. However, that was not to be as he passed away in the first week of October that year.

I found my father very sad on one of my weekends during October 1988 and I came to know that he was deeply upset over the sad demise of the doctor with whom he had developed a rapport in a very short time!
