Not ‘access-controlled’ but ‘access-free’ Highway!

October 1, 2024

Sir,

Motorists travelling on the so-called ‘access-controlled’ Mysuru-Bengaluru tolled Highway are vulnerable not only to robbers, dacoits and slow-moving vehicles like two-wheelers, autos and tractors but also to pedestrians crossing the six-lane highway without regard for their own safety or that of the fast-moving vehicles.

During my recent trips on this road, I have frequently noticed people of all ages, including school students and elderly individuals, crossing the highway at various points, particularly near Bidadi, where fencing is missing in many areas.

These gaps also pose a risk of stray animals entering the highway, where vehicles travel at speeds of no less than 80 kmph. Such crossings present a serious threat to pedestrians, animals, and the safety of vehicle occupants.

While there may not have been any accidents so far due to this type of pedestrian movement, the potential for future incidents cannot be ruled out. Therefore, I urge the authorities to take proactive measures to prevent both pedestrians and animals from entering the ‘access-controlled’ highway, ensuring road safety and reducing      the risk of accidents.
