Mysuru: While most of the schools wash their hands off after providing the mandatory mid-day meal scheme initiated by the State government, authorities of Sri Sathya Sai Baba Higher Primary and High School, Jayalakshmipuram, have gone a step ahead in providing free breakfast for students.

The programme was launched yesterday at 8.30 am in the presence of Swami Atmajnanandaji, President of Sri Ramakrishna Ashrama, Mysuru by H.R. Basappa, DDPI.

Block Education Officer Udayakumar, Chairman of the School K.B. Prabhu Prasad, Secretary K. Sathish, Principal Thrimurthy and Treasurer Vijayalakshmi Muralidhar were present.

Speaking on the occasion, Swami Atmajnanandaji said that the school was doing a noble work of providing free breakfast for students who mostly come to school hungry. He called upon other schools to follow the example of Sri Sathya Sai Baba Higher Primary and High School.

The school was founded in 1959 by Sunandamma Narasimha lyengar, who was an ardent Sai devotee and a freedom fighter. She started this school under Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba Makkala and Mahila Koota Trust to provide value-based quality education to the children of financially backward families.

Education is given in both Kannada and English mediums and there are 136 students studying in Kannada medium and 500 students in the English medium. All the students studying in Kannada medium and 80% of those studying in English medium are from below poverty level families. The government provides free mid-day meals only to the students studying in Kannada medium.

Appeal

Daily breakfast would cost Rs. 3,000 for 320 students studying in fifth to tenth standards. The school authorities have requested contributions from donors and philanthropists for the cause. Mysureans can also contribute individually or in the name of their loved ones or celebrate their birthdays and anniversaries in a meaningful way by contributing to the breakfast scheme. Philanthropists can also donate endowment fund for the scheme.
