Notaries oppose amendment Bill

December 12, 2021

Mysore/Mysuru: The Mysuru-Chamarajanagar District Notaries Association has strongly opposed  ‘The Notaries Amendment Bill-2021’ introduced by the Centre.

Addressing a press meet here on Thursday, Association President N.S. Mahadevaswamy said the amendment puts a bar on the continuance of service of Notaries who have completed 15 years in profession. Contending that this restriction will cause severe hardship to lakhs of Notaries across the country, Mahadevaswamy said that the Government should focus on creating jobs instead of rendering people jobless.

He maintained that Notaries are selected based on their seniority and legal experience. As such, only those who have rendered ten years of Bar service, will only be selected as Notaries. The discontinuance after 15 years means that senior advocates will stand to lose their seniority and experience, he observed.

Former President B.S. Prashanth, who also addressed the press meet, said that senior advocates are dependent on their Notary profession for livelihood. Pointing out that the Government can appoint as many Notaries as it wants, he contended that those already in profession for years should not be left out as such an action will snatch away their livelihood.

Prashanth further said that a letter has been written to the Prime Minister in this regard, appealing him not to enforce the Amendment Bill.

Association office-bearers B. Rajeshwari, P. Ramesh and Suresh Babu were present at the press meet.
