Mysuru: How many Policemen are needed to bring a house-burglar from one State to another? Under normal circumstances, a maximum of three to four Policemen will accompany a criminal to ensure that he does not escape.
In this case, however, the burglar was so notorious that he had to be brought to Mysuru from Tamil Nadu by more than 12 Police officers and staff. He was handed over to the Mysuru Police yesterday for them to probe burglary cases in Saraswathipuram and T.K. Layout.
Investigating over four burglary cases at Saraswathipuram and T.K. Layout that occurred in the last two months, Saraswathipuram Police had arrested Mani and Ravi sometime back. Interrogating them, the Police found that the kingpin of the gang was Arul Raj, who hailed from Madurai in Tamil Nadu.
Arul Raj has more than 30 house burglary cases against him and he is an expert in breaking locks and almirahs. The Chennai and Madurai Police had arrested him in the past but he either managed to escape from custody or secure bail from the courts.
Knowing Arul Raj’s background, the Saraswathipuram Police contacted Madurai Police and learnt that Arul Raj was arrested a couple of days back and was in their custody. Wasting no time, the Saraswathipuram Police applied for a body warrant in the court to investigate cases in Mysuru and informed their counterparts in Madurai.
Accordingly, a team left from Madurai yesterday morning and it comprised one DySP, one Inspector, 2 Sub-Inspectors, 3 ASIs, plus other staff. They arrived at Thalavadi Karnataka-Tamil Nadu border in Chamarajanagar and handed over Arul Raj to Mysuru Police.
The Mysuru Police team was led by Saraswathipuram Inspector K.C. Poovaiah, two Sub-Inspectors, 2 ASIs and other staff. The team had taken a City Armed Reserve Vehicle to the border to bring Arul Raj. When asked why so much Policemen to bring just one criminal, Police sources said that they did not want to take any chance as the Madurai Police had informed them before hand about Arul’s notoriety.
Arul has been produced before a magistrate yesterday night who has handed him over to four-day Police custody. The Police now have to recover stolen valuables.
