Nurse loses Rs. 14.96 lakh in online work scam

May 12, 2022

Gundlupet: A nurse, who fell for a message sent to her mobile phone which offered online work from home in return for thousands of rupees as earnings, has lost Rs. 14.96 lakh besides undergoing blackmail from those who had offered her online work.

Lalitha, a Staff Nurse at Gundlupet Government Hospital and a resident of Koudalli in Hanur taluk, is the one who has lost money in the online work scam.

Details: On Nov. 2, 2021, Lalitha received a message which stated “Work from home and earn up to Rs. 20,000 a month.” To earn extra income, Lalitha responded to the message by replying to the number on WhatsApp.

Later, a woman, identifying herself as Yashika, Assistant Manager of an e-commerce company, called Lalitha over the phone and told her that she could earn from Rs. 500 to Rs. 5,000 daily through commission for products bought by international online shopping platform merchants.

As per Yashika’s instructions, Lalitha got her name registered and had submitted all required details. Lalitha was then being sent online games for which she was asked to deposit money.

The fraudsters also sent her receipts mentioning that the commission money has been deposited to the bank account of one Suyoglalitha.

At one point of time, when Lalitha asked to return her money, no one responded following which Lalitha stopped sending WhatsApp messages to them.

Later, one Raashini called Lalitha on her phone and told her that she (Lalitha) had agreed for their conditions in her WhatsApp message and threatened of filing a case against her if she stopped the                                     work in the middle.

When Lalitha again asked them to return her money, the fraudsters refused to pay her money back. On learning that she has been duped, Lalitha, on May 5, lodged a complaint at Chamarajanagar Cyber, Economic and Narcotics (CEN) Crime Police Station.
