Mysuru: An unusual sighting of the Oleander Hawk-Moth (Daphnis nerii), popularly known as the ‘Army Green Moth,’ at the residence of C.R. Dinesh in Mathura Nagar yesterday has drawn the attention of nature lovers and environmental enthusiasts.

The large moth, which has a wingspan of up to 13-cm, is known for its striking olive-green, brown and pink leaf-like patterns that help it blend almost seamlessly with foliage. Belonging to the order Lepidoptera and family Sphingidae, the species is found across tropical regions of Asia and Africa, including India.

Its wings feature intricate swirls of green, pink and white, providing effective natural camouflage. The larvae feed on ornamental plants commonly found in gardens in Karnataka, including oleander (Nerium oleander) and crape jasmine (Tabernaemontana divaricata).

The caterpillars have prominent false eye-spots near the head, which can make them resemble small snakes and help deter predators.

The moth is primarily active during the evening and night and plays an important role as a nocturnal pollinator. Adults use their long proboscis to feed on nectar from fragrant flowers, including jasmine and petunias, while transferring pollen between blossoms.

Entomologists say the presence of the Oleander Hawk-Moth is an indicator of Mysuru’s rich biodiversity and highlights the ecological value of the city’s green spaces.
