Online fraud: Elderly citizen among two cheated of over Rs. 22 lakh

Mysuru: In separate cases, online fraudsters have cheated two persons including a senior citizen to the tune of Rs. 22,56,650 in city.

In the first case, a 60-year-old resident of Bogadi, was befriended by a man on Facebook on Mar. 23. The man, who introduced himself as Philo Victor, told the senior citizen that he was a resident of the United Kingdom (UK) and took his (senior citizen) mobile phone number and began to send messages to him.

On May 28, Victor called the senior citizen and told him that he was in New Delhi and asked the senior citizen for some money to complete the immigration formalities and he would return the money later.

Believing him, the senior citizen transferred Rs. 10,85,900 to the bank account of Victor. After a few days the senior citizen realised that he has been cheated and lodged a complaint.

In the second case, a stranger, who befriended a 42-year-old resident of Naidu Nagar on Facebook on Apr. 10 and began to chat with the latter on WhatsApp after a few days.

After gaining his confidence, the stranger told the man that he has sent 15,000 pounds as a gift to him and he has to pay taxes to claim the gift and got a total of Rs. 11,70,750 transferred in phases from the Naidu Nagar resident.

When the stranger went incommunicado, he realised that he was cheated and lodged a complaint.

City’s CEN Police, who have registered both the cases, are investigating.
