Mysuru: In separate cases, online fraudsters, who targeted 3 persons, including an elderly man, have cheated them to the tune of over Rs. 1 crore by luring them with huge profits for investments, only to pocket their money without their knowledge and also placing one of the victims under digital arrest.
In the first case, online fraudsters, who targeted an elderly man, have cheated him of over Rs. 89 lakh. The elderly man from N.R. Mohalla, who was included in Tata Investment Club WhatsApp group by fraudsters, made him invest Rs. 89,62,000. Though the elderly man received some amount of money as profit initially, the profit stopped after a few days, thus cheating him.
In the 2nd case, fraudsters siphoned off Rs. 10,50,000 from the account of a Datta Nagar resident.
In the third case, a young engineer from Gangothri Layout received a call a few days ago and the caller, who identified himself from DHL Express, told him that 200 grams of MDMA narcotic substance was booked in his name and asked the engineer to lodge a complaint at Delhi Division.
The caller then put the engineer on a conference call during which another person told the engineer that a bank account used for money laundering was created in his name illegally and told him that he will be put on digital arrest. The caller then told the engineer to produce an inspection letter from RBI stating that he was not using the bank accounts so that he could come out of the case. The caller also told the engineer to transfer the money in his account to the Department’s account for safety.
After threatening the engineer, the caller got a total of Rs. 7,82,000 transferred in phases, thus cheating him.
