‘Only 30% of groundwater is potable in Karnataka’

Mysuru: Department of Geology of University of Mysore had organised an event at Rani Bahadur Auditorium in Manasagangothri recently for the release of the handbook ‘Water Chemistry-interpretation, software and application’ written by Dr. A. Balasubramanian and Dr. D. Nagaraj.

Speaking on the occasion, Central Groundwater Board Regional Director A. Subburaj observed that about 70% of groundwater in the State has been used up leaving just 30% to be treated and used for drinking. He pointed out that the nitrate and fluoride contents in groundwater have increased compelling for compulsory treatment. He said that the groundwater table is dipping 10cm every year which should be religiously    replenished with good rainwater soak pits. He lauded the handbook as an invaluable guide on the subject.

Releasing the handbook UoM VC Dr. G. Hemantha Kumar said that water consumption had increased over the last ten years in the varsity as the student strength too had swelled. He welcomed suggestions to tackle the prevailing water crisis.

Former MCC Commissioner Dr. K.N. Chandrashekar, UoM Registrar Prof. Lingaraj Gandhi, Registrar (Evaluation) Prof. K.M. Mahadevan, UoM Entrepreneurship Counselling Centre Director D. Anand, HoD of Geology M.S. Sethumahadev, authors Balasubramanian and Nagaraj     were present.
