Organisation working for the disabled accuse officials of apathy

Mysuru: Accusing officials of apathy in implementing Government schemes for the disabled, the city’s Vikala Vikasa Organisation  has alleged that the funds meant for disabled welfare schemes were unspent and returned to the Union Government.

Addressing a press meet here yesterday, the Organisation President S.S. Vaidyanath claimed that District Disability Rehabilitation Centres (DDRCs) have been set up in only 16 districts, although the Union Government set aside funds for setting up the DDRCs in all districts in 2010-11.

Maintaining that the Disabled Welfare Department had failed in implementing most of the  Disabled Welfare Schemes, including five percent reservation in jobs, he said that the Department had failed to utilise Rs.21 crore sanctioned by the Union Govt.

Alleging that Zilla Panchayats, Taluk Panchayats, Town Panchayats, City Corporations and other Local Bodies have failed in appropriate use of 3% funds for the disabled, Vaidyanath urged the Govt. to initiate action for implementing the disabled welfare schemes.
