Mysuru: The two-member committee appointed by Governor and Chancellor Vajubhai Rudabhai Vala to look into the alleged illegal appointments of non-teaching staff, began its investigation yesterday.

First, to arrive was Prof. Maruti Rao Nimbalkar, Syndicate Member of Rani Chennamma University, who reached the city last afternoon. Immediately, he got the files related to the issue to the place where he was staying. This morning, the other member Prof. Kanubhai Govind Manavi, the former Vice-Chancellor from Gujarat arrived and the two have begun the probe into the illegal appointments.

They also visited the chambers of the Dy. Registrar, here this morning to collect details. Meanwhile, Registrar Prof. R. Rajanna, speaking to SOM, said, “I am in Bengaluru undergoing a training. I will fully cooperate with the probe and whenever I am called, I will be available. We have handed over all the documents relating to the probe.”

Acting Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dayanand Mane refused to divulge much and said, “Since I am the one who has written to the Governor regarding the illegal appointments, I cannot talk about it.”

According to sources, the appointments were made during the tenure of former Vice-Chancellor Prof. K.S. Rangappa. “These are temporary appointments and under Act 56, the appointments have been made. The VC has the powers to make temporary appointments for both teaching and non-teaching staff and the Syndicate approval is not required for this.”

Another source close to the University, pointed out that the acting Vice-Chancellor had gone to receive the members personally. He alleged how the VC, who is the complainant, mingle with the committee members.

Sources said that there were just five or six files containing the names of the 96 people appointed to show to the enquiry committee. In each file, there could be the names of 15 to 20 people appointed.

However, there are talks that apart from the Registrar and Deputy Registrar, some of the Syndicate members, the former Vice-Chancellor and the Acting Vice-Chancellor could be called for enquiry in the coming days.
