Ponnu, the Bangle Seller!

July 5, 2024

Sir,

This is in continuation of the write-ups in Star of Mysore on Ponnu Muthanna of Pelican Pub, who passed away on June 21.

Life’s defining moments are from our first breath to our last. Ponnu made excellent use of every breath he took. Sweet is death that puts an end to all suffering, but we will miss Ponnu. He left behind a legacy of kindness and unwavering love of a life well-lived.

A fond memory I have of Ponnu dates back to 1956. While in college, both of us, along with Deachu Ganapathy, acted in a pantomime called ‘The Bangle Seller.’ Ponnu played the Bangle Seller, Deachu played the idol Devi, and I played the Priest.

Ever since then, throughout all these years, I continued greeting Ponnu by saying “Hello, Bangle Seller!”

Goodbye, Bangle Seller. May your wonderful soul rest in eternal peace.
