Postnatal mother dies in Mandya District Hospital

Mandya: A young mother, who delivered a baby, died of a heart attack soon after giving birth in Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS), also called the District Hospital, here on Thursday. The family has alleged the negligence of the doctors for her death.

The unfortunate woman is Anitha (25), wife of Gurulingaiah of Kelagare village in Channapatna taluk. As soon as she experienced symptoms of labour last Tuesday, she was admitted to the MIMS Hospital. The doctors informed the family that she had started bleeding on Thursday. Later, she had a heart attack when she was delivering the baby and died. However, the baby, (a boy), has survived and is doing well, it is learnt.

Relatives’ protest

As soon as the news of the death of the mother reached the relatives, they gathered in front of the hospital and staged a protest alleging negligence of doctors for the cause of the mother’s death.

Husband Gurulingaiah said that his wife was doing well. But, the doctors told him that she had started bleeding and by morning, soon after delivering the baby, she had died of heart attack.

“The doctors did not even allow me to see my wife and later they refused to allow us to see the body. Besides, when we asked for the treatment report, they refused. It was only due to the negligence of the doctors that I lost my wife,” Gurulingaiah, expressed his anguish. The hospital staff act high-handedly and are not prepared to listen to us, he said. The irate family and relatives of Anitha staged a protest in front of the hospital.

Anitha, daughter of Lakshmidevamma of Nagavara in Channapatna, was married to Gurulingaiah, son of Savithramma and Ramalingaiah of Kelagere in the same taluk, five years back. The couple already had a son, who is now three years old.
