Pregnant wife murdered Man sentenced to life

April 30, 2025

Mysuru: City’s 5th Additional District and Sessions Court has sentenced a man to life imprisonment after he was found guilty of murdering his pregnant wife and being responsible for the death of the baby in womb. The man who was sentenced to life is Manju, a resident of Nanjangud while his deceased wife is Shobha.

Manju, who was in love with Shobha, had married her and has a five-year-old son. Manju, who was leading a happy life with his wife, later used to come home drunk and assault Shobha besides torturing her.

When Shobha was eight months pregnant with a second baby, her father died in an accident and her mother had received the insurance money. Manju, who came to know about it, demanded Shobha to bring money and had got Rs. 3 lakh which he spent.

He again began to harass Shobha to bring more money from her mother and began to torture her. On Sept. 14, 2023, Shobha came to her mother’s house at Chamalapura Hundi for delivery. Manju, who came there began to quarrel with Shobha, abused her using foul language, took out a blade he had kept in his pocket and slashed the throat of Shobha.

Shobha was immediately rushed to Nanjangud Government Hospital and was later shifted to K.R. Hospital in Mysuru, where she breathed her last and the baby boy too died in the womb.

A case was registered at Nanjangud Town Police Station. The then Circle Inspector Basavaraju, who conducted an investigation had submitted a charge-sheet to the Court. Judge Gururaj Somakkalavar, who took up the case, heard the arguments from both sides, found the accused guilty of the crime and sentenced him to life imprisonment besides imposing a fine of Rs. 10,000.

B.E. Yogeshwar was the Public Prosecutor in this case.
