RamaGovinda awards- 2019 for Bezwada Wilson, Prahlad Tipanya

T.M. Krishna to inaugurate presentation ceremony on Jan.5

Mysuru: Smt. D. Ramabai Charitable Foundation and Sri M. Gopinath Shenoy Charitable Trust, Mysuru, have chosen Indian activist, Ramon Magsaysay Award winner Bezwada Wilson and Indian folk singer Padmashree Prahlad Singh Tipanya for its annual RamaGovinda Puraskara-2019.

These two institutions are associated with a pro-societal cause in education, health and cultural sectors, immensely involving human welfare and development. As an extension of their social endeavours, these two institutions have collectively instituted the ‘RamaGovinda Puraskara’ to be presented annually since 2016. This award is an yearly event, preceded by meticulous selection of an institution and individuals working for societal development.

This year’s Award Presentation Ceremony will be held at Kalamandira in city on Jan.5 at 6.pm.  Karnatak vocalist and author T.M. Krishna will inaugurate the programme.

M. Ramanatha Shenoy couple, M. Jagannath Shenoi couple and M. Gopinatha Shenoy couple will be  the chief guests.

At 7.30 pm, a programme titled ‘An evening with Kabir’ will be held where Prahlad Singh Tipanya and his troupe will render Kabir songs.

Awardees’ profile

Bezwada Wilson is one of the founders of National Convenor of Safai Karmachari Andolan (SKA), an Indian human rights organisation which has been campaigning for the eradication of manual scavenging, the construction, operation and employment of manual scavengers that has been banned in the country.

Prahlad Tipanya is one of the most compelling folk voices of Kabir in India today who combines singing and explanation of Kabir in the Malwi folk style from Madhya Pradesh. He had toured India as well as UK and USA. He has received several awards including Padmashree in 2011. Prahaladji set up the Kabir Smarak Seva Shodh Sansthan on a plot of land granted to him by State Government opposite his home in the village of Luniya  Khedi.

This registered Trust conducts an annual event where several thousands congregate to listen to Kabir’s words through bhajans and discourse by gathered singers and spiritual leaders.
